By far, one of the best parts about the neighborhood we moved into a few years ago is that it is a real community. We have excellent neighbors and the whole group of us regularly throw block parties. Almost any excuse will do - Massive county-wide blackout? Party. Returning home after precautionary evacuation due to wild fires? Party. Cultural holidays involving booze and/or grilled meats? BIG Party.
And so it is that we celebrated our sixth Oktoberfest in Rancho Penasquitos. The tradition has gone on much longer, probably a dozen years at least now, so it's become an annual favorite for so many - now including Annika. This year we were able to find a pretty excellent dirndl costume. When she saw the packaging she instantly declared that she'd be needing braids to go with - just like the model. She was also VERY excited to get to try out her "Training Stein" that Dad found a few months ago. Dad's not sure if this is really "a thing", or just a novelty, but it was too cute to pass up. Mom and Dad have their own steins, after all.
It was another great year. Some families we only see a few times a year (and they keep getting bigger!), others we see nearly every day, but having everyone together for excellent food (especially the handmade Pretzels, Legendary Potato Salad, and our Spaetzle), beer, and schnapps was a fantastic treat!
